There is something about fall in Winnipeg that makes you want to slow down. The golden leaves, cozy sweaters, crisp air and warm afternoon light create the kind of backdrop that makes family photos feel effortless. If you are looking for the best fall spots in Winnipeg for family photos, there are so many beautiful options right here in our city.
As a Winnipeg family photographer, I love locations that feel beautiful without feeling overly staged. The best spots give your family room to walk, play, cuddle and simply be together while the fall colours do the rest.
Here are some of my favourite places to consider when planning your next fall photo session.
When it comes to the best fall spots in Winnipeg, Assiniboine Park is an easy favourite.
There are so many different areas within the park that you can create a completely different feel depending on where you walk. Think tall trees, winding paths, open grassy spaces and beautiful pockets of colour.
The Gardens at The Leaf are especially beautiful as the seasons change. The Grove offers an arboretum setting with beautiful fall foliage, while the surrounding gardens give you plenty of variety within one location.
For families, I love that there is space to move. Instead of asking everyone to stand and smile at the camera, we can let your little ones explore while I photograph the in between moments.
Those are often my favourites.
If you love the idea of colourful trees and a classic Winnipeg park setting, Kildonan Park is another beautiful option.
The mature trees create a gorgeous canopy of fall colour, and there are plenty of pathways and open spaces where we can move around during your session.
It is particularly lovely for families who want a relaxed and natural feel.
Rather than staying in one spot for the entire session, we can walk together, let the kids run ahead, stop for cuddles and capture the little moments that happen naturally along the way.
One of the biggest things I want families to know is that you do not have to know how to pose.
You do not need perfectly behaved children.
You do not even need everyone looking at the camera.
My job as your Winnipeg family photographer is to guide you through the experience so you can focus on your family. Sometimes that means walking hand in hand. Sometimes it means picking up your toddler. Sometimes it means letting your kids chase each other through the leaves.
The goal is photos that actually feel like you.
If you want something that feels a little more natural and outdoorsy, FortWhyte Alive can be a beautiful fall option.
The trails, grasses, trees and natural landscape give your photos a completely different feeling from a traditional city park.
It is especially beautiful if you love earthy, authentic images and want your family session to feel like an afternoon spent exploring together.
Fall is also the perfect season for this type of location because you can incorporate cozy layers, boots and sweaters without worrying about the summer heat.
The Leaf at Assiniboine Park is another location worth considering if you want a little more variety.
The outdoor Gardens at The Leaf include several distinct garden areas, including the Seasonal Garden and The Grove. The Grove is particularly beautiful for fall foliage.
And if the weather takes an unexpected turn, having a location with additional indoor options can make your session feel a little less stressful.
That matters when you are planning family photos in Winnipeg during a season when the weather can change quickly.
St. Vital Park is another great choice for families who want that classic fall feeling.
The mature trees and pathways make it easy to create a variety of images without travelling between multiple locations.
I especially love locations like this for families with younger children because we can keep things moving. A little walking, a little exploring and plenty of opportunities for cuddles usually creates much more genuine expressions than asking everyone to hold a pose.
And honestly, those genuine moments are what you will want to remember years from now.
Beautiful leaves are obviously a big part of it, but they are not the only thing I look for when choosing a photography location.
I want somewhere that gives us:
• Beautiful natural light
• Plenty of fall colour
• Space for children to move
• Different backgrounds within one location
• Quiet moments for connection
• A relaxed experience for the whole family
The location is simply the backdrop.
Your family is the story.
That is why I do not believe you need to find the most impressive location in Winnipeg to have beautiful family photos. Sometimes the simplest path lined with golden trees creates the most meaningful images.
Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photographers in Winnipeg, and for good reason.
The season is short, the colours change quickly and everyone wants those warm golden images before winter arrives.
If you have a specific weekend or fall colour vision in mind, I recommend reaching out early.
The exact timing of peak colour can vary from year to year, so flexibility can also be helpful. Sometimes the prettiest photographs happen just before the leaves reach their peak, when there is still plenty of greenery mixed with warm autumn tones.

One of my favourite things about fall photos is imagining them printed.
Not sitting forgotten in your phone.
Not buried in a folder on your computer.
Printed photographs become part of your home and part of the everyday story of your family.
After your session, I help you choose the images you love and design artwork that fits your home, whether that means a beautiful framed portrait, a collection of wall art or an album filled with your favourite memories.
Because years from now, you probably will not remember exactly what day you took these photos.
But you will remember how your children looked at that age.
You will remember their little hands.
Their smiles.
The way they fit into your arms.
And that is what makes finding the best fall spots in Winnipeg worth it in the first place.
