There are some family sessions that feel like more than just a photography session. This was one of them.
As a Manitoba family photographer, I get to photograph families in so many beautiful places, but there is something incredibly meaningful about documenting a family in a place that holds generations of their story.
For the Hodel Family, that place is their family farm in the Whiteshell.
This is not simply a farm that belongs to their family. It is a place where history, family, work and childhood have all come together.
It is a business that Pascal, their dad, inherited from his parents. It is a place where their family has built a life. And perhaps most meaningfully, it is the very place where their two boys, Dawon and Rhett, were born.
So when we stepped onto this property for their family photography session, we were not just photographing a beautiful location.
We were photographing home.
There is something so powerful about photographing families in the places that mean the most to them.
For the Hodel Family, the farm carries pieces of their family history everywhere you look.
Pascal’s parents passed the business down to him. Now, he is raising his own boys there.
Dawon and Rhett are growing up surrounded by the same land, the same stories and the same family legacy that came before them.
That is the kind of story I love documenting as a Manitoba family photographer.
Because when you look at these photographs years from now, you will not just see two little boys.
You will see the place where they grew up.
You will remember the land beneath their feet.
You will remember their childhood.
And you will remember that this was the place where generations of their family built something together.
There was something especially beautiful about watching Dawon and Rhett explore the farm during their session.
This is their childhood.
They get to grow up knowing this place in a way that only children who are deeply connected to a piece of land can.
And because they were born here, the connection runs even deeper.
There is a beautiful full circle feeling to it.
Pascal’s parents built something here.
Pascal inherited it and continued it.
Now his boys are growing up here.
And one day, these photographs will help them remember what this chapter looked and felt like.
That is so much more than a family portrait.
It is a piece of family history.
There is something wonderfully different about photographing a family on their own property.
We were not trying to recreate a beautiful setting or make their family fit into someone else’s idea of what a family session should look like.
We were documenting their actual life.
The farm.
The land.
The boys.
Their connection to one another.
Their connection to their home.
And all of the little details that make this place uniquely theirs.
That is one of my favourite things about lifestyle family photography. The location becomes part of the story.
Years from now, the photographs will not simply say, “This is what we looked like.”
They will say, “This is where we grew up.”
And I think there is something incredibly special about that.
When families ask me where they should have their session, I always want to know what places hold meaning for them.
Because sometimes the most beautiful location is not a perfectly manicured garden or a picturesque studio.
Sometimes it is home.
Sometimes it is the backyard.
And sometimes, it is a family farm that has been passed down through generations.
The Hodel Family’s farm was the perfect setting because every part of it already had meaning.
There was no need to manufacture connection.
It was already there.
You could feel it in the way the boys moved through the property and in the significance the land holds for their parents.
That is what makes photographs like these so powerful.
They are beautiful, but they are also personal.
After the session, the Hodel Family chose three pieces of wall art to hang above their couch.
I absolutely love this choice for them.
Because every day, they will walk past those photographs.
They will see their boys.
They will see this farm.
They will see this particular season of their family.
And instead of those memories living on a computer or buried somewhere in a phone, they will become part of their home.
That is exactly why I believe so strongly in printing photographs.
Your family photographs should not disappear into a digital folder.
They should be something you see every day.
Something your children grow up looking at.
Something that becomes part of the story of your home.
The Hodel Family also chose an album to preserve this chapter of their story.
And I think there is something especially fitting about an album for a family with such a strong generational connection.
Wall art lets you live with the memories every day.
An album allows you to preserve the whole story.
One day, Dawon and Rhett will be able to open those pages and see themselves as little boys on the farm where they were born.
They will see their parents.
They will see their childhood.
And they will have something tangible to hold that tells a piece of their family’s story.
That is what makes heirloom photography so meaningful to me.
It is not just about what we create today.
It is about what we are creating for the people who come after us.
The Hodel Family’s session is such a beautiful example of why I believe photographs are meant to be printed.
Three pieces of wall art now have a place above their couch, where their family can enjoy them every day.
And their album will preserve this chapter for the future.
These are not just photographs of Dawon and Rhett.
They are photographs of a family legacy.
Of a farm passed from one generation to another.
Of two boys growing up in the very place where they were born.
Of parents building a life and preserving the memories along the way.
As a Manitoba family photographer, these are the stories I feel so grateful to document.
Because someday, the boys will be bigger.
The farm will look a little different.
Life will move into its next chapter.
But these photographs will remain.
They will remind them where they came from.
And hopefully, they will remind Dawon and Rhett just how special their childhood really was.
